In Central Texas, the sun is a landscape’s toughest enemy. Without protection, your soil loses moisture in minutes and your plant roots suffer.

When it’s 100F in San Antonio, the bare ground can reach much higher temperatures, “cooking” your plants’ roots. A thick layer of mulch acts as insulation, keeping the soil significantly cooler and locking in moisture so you spend less money on your water bill.

Did you know that weeds need two things to thrive? light and space. By professionally applying mulch, we block the sunlight from reaching weed seeds.

In this post, we just finished a maintenance job for a client in San Antonio, and we added a fresh layer of mulch. Which does 3 things:

Did you cuddle with your potted plants last night?

It is perfectly natural to feel a bit discouraged about gardening in San Antonio right now. As of today, January 18, 2026, San Antonio is experiencing its first hard freeze of the season, with temperatures dropping into the mid-to-upper 20s.

Quick Recovery Tips for Today:
• Water them: If the soil is dry, give your plants a drink. Moist soil stays warmer than dry soil and helps the roots recover.

• Be Patient: Some plants won’t show signs of life again until March or April. Don’t dig them up yet!

Bring them inside: You can (and should) bring your potted plants inside if you’re worried about them.

Don’t put them right next to a heater: Moving a plant from 25°F outside to a 72°F living room right next to a vent is a massive shock.

• If you can, put them in a garage, laundry room, or enclosed porch first. This lets them adjust.

• Try to place them near a window so they still get some natural light, especially if they are going to be inside for more than a day or two.
Since we just had a hard freeze, the soil outside is currently very cold, which will prevent many seeds from germinating.

However…

This is the absolute best time to start your “Summer” garden indoors. You want these plants to be strong transplants by the time the last frost hits (usually early March).
What to plant now: Tomatoes, Peppers, and Eggplants.
Why: These need 6–8 weeks of warmth to grow before they are ready for the Texas sun. By starting them inside today, they’ll be ready for the ground in March.

In San Antonio, timing is everything. Because our “winters” are mild and our summers are scorching, broccoli must be grown during the cool window to avoid “bolting” (flowering and becoming bitter).

Amend your soil with at least 3 inches of finished compost. Mix in a balanced organic fertilizer (like amend w/ compost, vermicompost, ground coffee beans) before the plants go in the ground.
2. Planting: Plant 12–18 inches apart. Set transplants slightly deeper than they were in the pot to encourage stability. Plant broccoli seeds shallowly, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep.
• Sunlight: Full sun (at least 6 hours). In San Antonio, afternoon shade in September can actually help fall transplants survive the lingering heat.
3. Maintenance:
• Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Mulch heavily with straw or shredded leaves to keep roots cool.
• Pest issues:Cabbage loopers (small green worms) are common here. Use Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) spray—it’s organic and highly effective.
4. Harvest:
• Cut when the buds (head) are tight and firm, before they start to turn yellow (flowering). Cut at an angle so water doesn’t pool in the stalk.

Don’t pull the plant! Most varieties will grow “side shoots” (mini-broccoli) for several weeks after the main head is harvested.
*Don’t wash until you’re ready to eat. It stays crisp in the fridge for about 5–7 days.

Broccoli leaves have more Vitamin A and Calcium than the florets! They taste like a milder, sweeter version of Kale.
Sauté them with garlic and olive oil, or use the large leaves as a low-carb wrap for tacos or sandwiches.

If your zucchini or pumpkin vines are suddenly wilting, you aren’t just looking at a “bug problem”you’re looking at Anasa Tristis, the Squash Bug. 🎃🕵️‍♂️

Most people reach for heavy duty pesticides the moment they see a bug, but that often does more harm than good by killing the bees we need for pollination. 🐝

Here is a natural way to win the war on squash bugs without nuking your garden:

1.Squash bugs lay clusters of shiny, bronze colored eggs in the “V” of the leaf veins. Don’t wait for the bugs to hatch. Rub the eggs off with your thumb or use a piece of duct tape to “wax” them off the leaf. Prevention is 10x more effective than treatment.

2. Squash bugs inject a toxic saliva into the plant to help them suck out the sap. This causes “Sudden Wilt.” If only one leaf is wilting while the rest look okay, check the base of that specific stem immediately!

3. Tachinid flies are natural enemies of squash bugs. By planting flowers like dill, cilantro, or alyssum nearby, you’re inviting the “good guys” to do the pest control for you.

Hollyhocks (Alcea rosea) are flowering plants in the mallow family that are native to Asia and Europe. They are a classic cottage garden staple and bloom in mid-summer with many flowers on tall spikes. Hollyhocks can grow in most soils, including dry and heavy soils, in full sun. They grow best in well-drained soil and a location with full sun. They can benefit from protection from the wind because of their tall size and tendency to flop.
